What Do Cramps After Sex Mean?

Some women have reported having cramps after sex. Women who experience these cramps get worried about having a faulty reproductive system, which is totally a myth. Having these cramps is not an unusual body behavior, as they are nothing to be concerned about. It is usually a sign of underlying health condition. There are a number of reasons to have these cramps after intercourse. We will discuss them in the later parts of this article.

Causes of cramps after sex

Following are few of the basic reasons of having cramps after sex. These might not be for all the women who experience these cramps, but if a woman gets cramps after intercourse it has to be because of one of the following reasons.

  • Endometriosis

This is a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, where it does not belong actually. Sometimes the tissue grows on ovaries. As the tissue is the lining of the uterus, it thickens and sheds eventually, but when the blood does not have an easy way to leave the body; it is trapped and causes pain. Women having endometriosis tend to have more painful periods and a painful sex.

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

In this situation, the uterus and fallopian tubes become inflamed causing cramps after sex. Women who suffer from pelvic inflammatory disease also have painful cramps before and during their periods also.

  • Cysts or fibroids

Fibroids are a non-cancerous tumor which is formed on the uterus. Cysts can also be formed on the ovaries, which is why both these conditions bring painful cramps after sex. Cysts and fibroids are completely harmless but it is still important to see a doctor as they can be removed to reduce the intensity of pain.

  • Orgasm

Orgasm also causes severe cramping in lower abdomen after sex. Some women get cramps in their bottom, which might last for a few minutes to a few hours. However, this situation is common for the women between the age of 35 to 55 and the women who are at or near their menopause.

  • Deep penetration or tilted uterus

Women might get cramps after sex if the cervix is hit during intercourse. Hitting the cervix during intercourse causes it to contract, leading to cramping. Women who have a tilted or tipped uterus also face painful cramping after sex. The cervix is usually hit due to deep penetration.

  • Early pregnancy

Women get cramps in the early days of pregnancy, especially after an orgasm. It causes uterine contractions, just like menstrual cramps. Are some cases, cramps are mild and sometimes they can be of higher intensity. So, if you are pregnant, and experiencing painful cramping, then you must visit your doctor, who might advise you to avoid having frequent sex in the first trimester or till the fetus is mature.

Cramps after sex are a usual thing. There is nothing to worry about, but if you are bleeding after sex along with painful cramping, then there is a need to visit your doctor and get a complete checkup. Cramps are usually normal. Woman do not have to panic or do not have to take irregular medications. You can get quick relief from heating or using a hot water bottle. A little oil massage also gives relief from the pain of cramps. However, tea, hot coffee and chicken stock proves to be very effective in this regard.
